Downey, Ronald J. (University of Nebraska, Lincoln), Carl E. Georgi, and Walter E. Militzer. Electron transport particles from Bacillus stearothermophilus. J. Bacteriol. 83:1140-1146. 1962-Electron-transport particles (ETP) have been isolated from Bacillus stearothermophilus. They are capable of oxidizing such substrates as succinate, malate, diphosphopyridine nucleotide, p-phenylenediamine, and hydroquinone. Difference spectra indicated bands of cytochromes a(3), b, and c. A chromatographic procedure for purification of cytochrome c has been described. The role of quinonelike intermediates in the ETP was implied by the restorative effect of coenzyme Q and vitamin K(1) on material treated with lipid solvent. Isolation and identification of coenzyme Q from the thermophile indicated it was similar to coenzyme Q(10) of mammalian sources.

Cation-selectivity of the L-glutamate transporters of Escherichia coli, Bacillus stearothermophilus and Bacillus caldotenax: dependence on the environment in which the proteins are expressed.
L-Glutamate transport by the H(+)-glutamate and Na(+)-glutamate symport proteins of Escherichia coli K-12 (GltPEc and GltSEc, respectively) and the Na(+)-H(+)-glutamate symport proteins of Bacillus stearothermophilus (GltTBs) and Bacillus caldotenax (GltTBc) was studied in membrane vesicles derived from cells in which the proteins were either homologously or heterologously expressed. Substrate ...
متن کاملHeat stabilities of ribosomal subunits and reassociated ribosomes from Bacillus stearothermophilus.
Absorbance-temperature profiles reveal that both the 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits from Bacillus stearothermophilus are more thermostable than the comparable Escherichia coli particles. Thermophile ribosomes formed by the reassociation of subunits do not display functional heat stability.
متن کاملThe suitability of a monofunctional reagent of an undecagold cluster for phasing data collected from the large ribosomal subunits from Bacillus stearothermophilus.
An electron density map of the large ribosomal subunit from Bacillus stearothermophilus was obtained at 26 A resolution by single isomorphous replacement (SIR) from a derivative formed by specific quantitative labeling with a dense undecagold cluster. For derivatization, a monofunctional reagent of this cluster was bound to a sulfhydryl group of a purified ribosomal protein, which was in turn r...
متن کاملCharacterization of single crystals of the large ribosomal particles from Bacillus stearothermophilus.
Single, three-dimensional crystals of the 50 S ribosomal subunit from Bacillus stearothermophilus (strain NCA) have been characterized using a synchrotron X-ray source. The crystals are orthorhombic with unit cell dimensions: a = 350 A, b = 670 A, c = 905 A, and contain at least one 2-fold screw axis. With cooling to -2 degrees C, the large crystals (1.0 mm X 0.2 mm X 0.1 mm) diffract to 15 to ...
